HOW TO GET THE FULL MALDIVES EXPERIENCE FOR LESS

The Maldives is often synonymous with luxury, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of reach for budget-conscious travelers.  I can assure you that you don’t have to declare bancrupcy when you get back from your tropical paradise getaway. Here’s how you can get the full Maldives experience for less.

1. Travel during off season

While peak season (Northern Hemisphere winter) can skyrocket prices in the Maldives, the off-season (Northern Hemisphere summer) offers nearly the same experience for a fraction of the cost. Expect more unpredictable weather, but if you’re willing to take the risk, you’ll enjoy fewer crowds and significant savings.

My personal experience: I visited Sun Island in July 2015 and Lux South Ari Atoll in May 2023, and both times the weather was stunning. Sure, there was a bit of rain at night, but the days were mostly warm and sunny. Weather can’t be predicted, but don’t let that scare you – it’s worth considering the off-season if you want to save big.

2. Opt for a 3 or 4 star hotel or a guesthouse with great reviews

Contrary to popular belief, the Maldives isn’t all about 5-star resorts. You can find budget-friendly alternatives with just as much charm and stunning views. Consider staying at places like Kirulhiya Maldives, Gangehi Island Resort, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma and Medhufushi Island Resort. These 3- and 4-star resorts with great reviews offer solid reviews without the sky-high price tag.

Note! I haven’t personally stayed at these resorts. Think of these as a starting point for affordable hotels with solid reviews and do your own research.

3. Combine beach bungalow + water villa

Nothing says Maldives like staying in a water villa, but the price can be daunting. The first time I visited, we spent 3 nights in a beach bungalow and 7 nights in a water villa, and the second time we split 14 nights equally between the two. By mixing it up, you can experience both options without the hefty price of staying in a water villa for your entire stay.

Play around with different combinations until you find a price that works for your budget.

4. Book with the resort – not a third party site

You’re likely to find the best deals on the resort’s website. Many resorts offer promotions, especially during the off-season. On one of our trips, we scored a free upgrade from full board to all-inclusive, along with a honeymoon package—deals we wouldn’t have received if we’d booked through a third-party site.

That said, it’s always worth comparing prices across booking platforms to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

5. Skip the seaplane – opt for a domestic flight and/or speedboat

Seaplane transfers can be one of the most expensive parts of a Maldives getaway. In fact, a round-trip seaplane flight from Male to a resort can cost as much as flying across Europe multiple times! Instead, look for resorts that offer access via domestic flight or speedboat. This can save you hundreds of dollars while still allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives

6. Pack everything you need

Island shops are notoriously overpriced, so make sure you pack everything you need before you arrive. Whether it’s snorkel gear, sunscreen, or a beach bag, don’t leave these essentials at home. If your resort doesn’t offer free snorkel rentals, having your own gear will save you money.
